Grants & Awards

Generous donations from individuals, institutions, agencies, and companies provide for a variety of financial support opportunities to attend the NSS/MIC conference or short course program. This support is provided in the form of grants, each having specific requirements and credited against conference expenses. The NPSS Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant, the Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant, the NPSS Child Care Assistance Grant and the Conference Trainee Grants will be available in 2019. Several awards are also available. The specific application deadlines are shown in the description for each award below. All applications and recommendations must be submitted online. For more information contact:

2019 Conference Trainee Grants

  • Application Deadline: May 30, 2019
  • Support: The grants will be in the form of direct payments by the conference toward the conference registration, workshop, and short course fees. There will be no support available for travel or hotels. The exact number and value of grants will be determined by the available funding.
  • Application: Applicants should check the eligibility box during Abstract Submission and the application form will appear in their profile.

  • Description: There will be a limited number of grants for support of trainees (graduate students and post-doctoral fellows) to attend the conference. A post-doctoral applicant is eligible for up to five years from the graduation date.
  • Funding: Funded by sponsors of the conference.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must have submitted an abstract to the 2019 NSS, MIC or RTSD. Based on technical merit, the technical program committees will recommend candidates to the scholarship committee for final selection. Applicants will be notified in early July. Grants will be made according to the following criteria until all available funds are committed:
    • First priority to students /postdocs who are first authors of accepted abstracts
    • Second priority to students /postdocs who are co-authors or presenters of accepted abstracts
    • Within any category, funds will be distributed according to the date the letter of recommendation is received

The support for these grants comes from different sources. Some grants may have restrictions, e.g., limited to IEEE members. Grant recipients will be expected to write a letter of thanks to the sponsor which provided the funds for their trainee grant.

  • Recommendations & basis for judging: Applicants need to have their supervisor/mentor(s) complete online letters of recommendation by June 13, 2019. The request for a recommendation is sent directly to the E-mail address for your supervisor/advisor listed in your grant application. If a request is not received within 24 hours of submitting a grant application please contact merrykeyser@ieee.org.
  • Note: DO NOT start to complete a grant application before you have submitted all of your abstracts. If you apply for a grant, DO NOT register for the conference until you know the status of your application.

2019 Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant

  • Application Deadline: May 9, 2019
  • Support: Awardees will be reimbursed for approved expenses of up to USD 1500 associated with traveling to, and participating in, the IEEE NSS/MIC.
  • Application: Applications will open when the Abstract Submission is open. Applicants should check the eligibility box during Abstract Submission and the application form will appear in their profile.
  • Description: The purpose of the Valentin T. Jordanov Radiation Instrumentation Travel Grant is to promote graduate-level study and research on radiation instrumentation and to promote membership in the IEEE.
  • Funding: Funding provided by the IEEE Foundation.
  • Eligibility: Recipients must be graduate students or individuals who have obtained their highest degree less than five years prior to the start of the NSS/MIC. Preference will be given to applicants in the field of Nuclear Electronics with accepted abstracts for the NSS/MIC. Candidates should show exceptional promise in the field of Radiation Instrumentation.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: Academic Advisors/Supervisors will be asked to submit a letter of recommendation by June 13, 2019. Recommendations should address financial need, demonstrated technical merit, career intentions and worthiness of the candidate. The Scholarship Committee may seek additional information to clarify how candidates meet the requirements.

2019 NPSS Student Paper Awards

  • Application Deadline: While submitting abstracts
  • Support: The two best papers (two awards for each NSS and MIC) will receive cash awards of USD 500 each and a certificate. The two runners-up will receive a certificate.
  • Application: All candidates for selection must have identified themselves by checking the eligibility box at the time of abstract submittal.
  • Description: For outstanding student oral or poster papers presented at the NSS and MIC. The purpose of these awards is to encourage both outstanding student contributions and greater student participation as principal or sole authors of papers as well as to acknowledge the importance of student contributions to the fields embraced by NPSS.
  • Funding: Funded by the NSS/MIC Conference budget.
  • Eligibility: Any student who is the principal or sole author/researcher and the presenter of either a poster or an oral paper at the NSS or MIC and who has been identified as an eligible student. If there is a tie, preference will be given first to IEEE NPSS members, then to IEEE members, and finally to non-IEEE members.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: The on-site awards committee will rank the papers for technical content and originality first. Other criteria such as graphic display and clarity of data presentation may be considered.
  • Note: When possible, awards will be presented at the conference. If this is not possible, the recipients will be notified by mail or e-mail.

2019 Paul Phelps Continuing Education Grant

  • Application Deadline: August 1, 2019
  • Support: Maximum of USD 750 for each NSS recipient and USD 750 for each MIC recipient, mostly for tuition in NPSS Sponsored Short Courses/Tutorials, but in selected cases, possibly for partial travel or hotel room costs to attend an NSS or MIC Short Course. The grants will be in the form of direct payments by the conference toward Short Course tuition and/or partial hotel room costs. This year, we expect to make a minimum of two NPSS Phelps grants for NSS and two NPSS Phelps grants for MIC.
  • Application: Nominations for our grant selection process using the provided application forms (PDF Version, Word Version) should be sent to the respective NSS or MIC program chair with a copy to the scholarship chair (merrykeyser@ieee.org).
  • Description: To promote continuing education and encourage membership in NPSS.
  • Funding: Funded by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.
  • Eligibility: Outstanding NPSS Student Members and unemployed Members of NPSS who need assistance in changing career direction.
  • Recommendations basis for judging: Grants will be made according to the following criteria:
    Exceptional promise as a Graduate Student in any of the fields of NSS or MIC, or
    Exceptionally good work in those fields for currently unemployed NPSS members, with the expectation that attendance to one or more of the Short Courses will result in improved possibility of obtaining a job in one of the NSS or MIC fields. The selection committee (consisting of the Program and Short Course chairs or their designees) will recommend candidates to the General Chair for final selection.
  • Note: Self-nomination will not be accepted.
  • Award presentation: Presented each year at the NSS and MIC conferences.

2019 NPSS Child Care Assistance Grant

  • Application Deadline: August 1, 2019
  • Support: Maximum of USD 400 for each NSS recipient and USD 400 for each MIC recipient. The grants will be in the form of reimbursement for allowable expenses. This year we expect to make a minimum of five NPSS Child Care Assistance grants for NSS and five NPSS Child Care Assistance grants for MIC.
  • Application: Applicants for our grant selection process should send their application forms (Word Version) to the 2019 NSS/MIC scholarship chair: merrykeyser@ieee.org.
  • Description: The NPSS is offering child care reimbursement of up to USD 400 per family to assist conference attendees who incur additional childcare expenses by attending an NPSS conference.
  • Funding: Funded by the IEEE Nuclear and Plasma Sciences Society.
  • Eligibility:
    • Families where both parents are registered attendees at the conference
    • Parent (registered attendee) who brings child(ren) to the conference
    • Parent (registered attendee) who incurs additional expenses at home (above their normal child care expenses) while attending the conference
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: The selection committee will recommend applicants to the general chair for final selection. Preference will be given to applicants in the early stages of their careers who are IEEE NPSS members.
  • Note: Successful applicants will be notified by 30 September 2019, in sufficient time to make plans before the Early Registration deadline.

2019 Radiation Instrumentation Early Career Award (NSS)

  • Application Deadline: July 15, 2019
  • Support: USD 1500, engraved plaque, and certificate.
  • Application: Applications and additional information available on the NPSS web site.
  • Description: This award is given to a young investigator in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to the fields of radiation instrumentation and measurement techniques for ionizing radiation.
  • Funding: Funded by the NSS/MIC Conference budget.
  • Eligibility: Nominees will be judged by the RISC Awards Committee according to their contributions to the fields of radiation instrumentation and measurement techniques for ionizing radiation as demonstrated by the technical merit and creativity of their research. Priority will be given to nominees whose research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, especially if the nominee is first author.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: Nominees will be judged by the RISC Awards Committee.
  • Award presentation: The prize will be awarded at the IEEE/NPSS Nuclear Science Symposium
  • Membership requirements: No

2019 Emilio Gatti Radiation Instrumentation Technical Achievement Award (NSS)

  • Application Deadline: July 15, 2019
  • Support: USD 2000, engraved plaque, and certificate.

  • Description: This award is given to recognize a mid-career individual who has made significant and innovative technical contributions in the field of radiation detectors, radiation instrumentation, and/or nuclear electronics, and/or measurement techniques for ionizing radiation.
  • Funding: Funded by the NSS/MIC Conference budget.
  • Eligibility: Nominees should have at least ten years of professional experience and contributions in the area of radiation detectors, radiation instrumentation, and/or nuclear electronics, and/or measurement techniques for ionizing radiation.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: Nominees will be judged by the RISC Awards Committee.
  • Award presentation: The prize will be awarded at the IEEE/NPSS Nuclear Science Symposium
  • Membership requirements: No

2019 Glenn F. Knoll Radiation Instrumentation Outstanding Achievement Award (NSS)

  • Application Deadline: July 15, 2019
  • Support: USD 3000, engraved plaque, and certificate.
  • Application: Applications and additional information available on the NPSS web site.
  • Description: This award is given to an individual in recognition of outstanding and enduring contributions to the field of radiation instrumentation.
  • Funding: Funded by the NPSS.
  • Eligibility: Any individual whose long-standing contributions to the field are particularly worthy of recognition.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: Primary consideration will be given to nominees who have made original and significant innovations in the field of radiation instrumentation. Other factors include a nominee’s overall research contribution and his/her influence on radiation instrumentation through education.
  • Award presentation: The prize will be awarded at the IEEE/NPSS Nuclear Science Symposium
  • Membership requirements: No

2019 Bruce H. Hasegawa Young Investigator Medical Imaging Science Award (MIC)

  • Application Deadline: July 15, 2019
  • Support: USD 1500, engraved plaque, and certificate.

  • Description: This award is given to a young individual in recognition of significant and innovative technical contributions to the field of medical imaging science.
  • Funding: Funded by the NSS/MIC Conference budget.
  • Eligibility: Graduate students or other individuals, whose highest degree was awarded no more than six years prior to the date of nomination.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: Nominees will be judged according to their contributions to medical imaging science as demonstrated by the technical merit and creativity of their research. Priority will be given to nominees whose research has been published in peer-reviewed journals, especially if the nominee is the first author.
  • Award presentation: The prize will be awarded at the IEEE/NPSS Medical Imaging Conference
  • Membership requirements: No

2019 Medical Imaging Technical Achievement Award (MIC)

  • Application Deadline: July 15, 2019
  • Support: USD 2000, engraved plaque, and certificate.
  • Application: Applications and additional information available on the NPSS web site.
  • Description: This award is given to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of medical imaging science.
  • Funding: Funded by the NSS/MIC Conference budget.
  • Eligibility: At least eight years and no more than 25 years of professional experience and contributions in the field of medical imaging science after obtaining the highest degree, at the time of nomination.  The award is open to all active members of the medical imaging community.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: The committee will use a nomination package as the basis for evaluating the significance and degree of innovation. The principal criteria will be the contribution to the field and the impact on the state-of-the-art. Other factors are cumulative research contributions over the first part of the career, internationally recognized leadership, and mentorship.  Membership in the IEEE and NPS Society can be used as a factor in the case that the award committee has candidates that they deem qualified.

  • Membership requirements: No

2019 Edward J. Hoffman Medical Imaging Scientist Award (MIC)

  • Application Deadline: July 15, 2019

  • Description: This award is given to an individual in recognition of outstanding contributions to the field of medical imaging science.
  • Funding: Funded by the NPSS.
  • Eligibility: Any individual who has made outstanding technical contributions to the field of medical imaging science.
  • Recommendations & basis for judging: In selecting the recipient of this award, primary consideration will be given to the impact and innovativeness of a nominee’s research in the field of medical imaging science. Other factors include a nominee’s research contributions over a career and his/her influence on medical imaging science through education.
    The nominee is not required to be a member of the NPSS or IEEE but, where candidates have otherwise equal qualifications, preference shall be given to the candidate who is a member of the IEEE.
